BIBLIA SACRA

Venetiis, Apud Nicolaum Pezzana. 1742.
Folio. 300x205mm. pp [20], 1060, lxiv (tables). Illustrated throughout with 210 woodcuts. Separate engraved title page dated 1743. Bound in contemporary vellum, title in manuscript on the spine. Some soiling to the covers and split to top part of the joints and rubbing to extremities. Internally very good but with some foxing in places, the occasional frayed edge and a marginal worm track to the first two gatherings. Overall a very nice copy of a Venetian vulgate produced by Nicolas Pezzana, from the family of one of the finest printers of Bibles and liturgical books in seventeenth and eighteenth-century Italy. The attractive woodcuts with charming border designs and the engraved title page are by Sister Isabella (her secular name was Elisabetta Piccini) from the Franciscan convent of Santa Croce.
